Rahul Srivasthav P clear first at 12th Annual Washington International 2025

GM Rahul Srivasthav P scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 12th Annual Washington International 2025 Championship (≥2200 or USCF 2000). He finished a half point ahead of the competition. GM Jianchao Zhou (USA) and GM Andrew Tang (USA) scored 7/9 each. They shared second place. The total prize fund was US$ 43650, $25000 in the Championship section. The top three prizes were $7000, $3500 and $1750 each. The five-day nine round Rating Open Championship (≥2000 or USCF ≥2200) tournament was organized by FA Mike Regan at Rockville Hilton in Rockville, Maryland, USA from 9th to 13th August 2025. This is Rahul's first rating tournament triumph of the year. Apart from Rahul, IM Ilamaparthi A R is the only other Indian to make top ten finish. Rahul's first rating tournament triumph of the year

Four players - GM Jianchao Zhou (USA), GM Andrew Tang (USA), GM Hedinn Steingrimsson (ISL) and GM Rahul Srivasthav P were sharing the lead 6.5/8 each, heading into the last round. Andrew drew against Jianchao.  They shared second place. Rahul defeated Hedinn to become a clear champion.

Position after 17...g5?

GM David Brodsky (USA, 2539) launched an ambitious attack 17...g5? which only backfired as his king was stranded in the middle of the board. GM Rahul Srivasthav P (2455) correctly found 18.Nd5 Qh5 19.g4 Qg6 20.Rfe1 f6 21.d4 cxd4 22.Qxd4 Kf8 23.Rad1 h5 24.c5 hxg4 25.fxg4 keeping the h-file half open for obvious reasons Qh7 26.Re3 Nc6 27.Qc3 dxc5 28.Nxe7! Ne5 29.Nf5 b6 30.Rd6 Qf7 31.Rxe5 fxe5 32.Qxe5 Qb7+ 33.f3 Rh7 34.Rf6+ Kg8 35.Rg6+ Kf8 36.Qf6+ and White won.

A total of 114 players including 18 GMs, 19 IMs, a WGM and 3 WIMs took part from 17 countries across the world. The five-day nine round Rating Open Championship (≥2000 or USCF ≥2200) tournament was organized by FA Mike Regan at Rockville Hilton in Rockville, Maryland, USA from 9th to 13th August 2025. The time control of the event was 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment per move.
